How It Works

Adding Prices

Add one row per price you find. Choose the option type (Buy New, Buy Used, Rent, Digital, or Other), enter the price, and optionally name the source (e.g. Amazon, Campus Bookstore, Chegg). The tool ranks all entries by net cost so you can see the best deal at a glance.

Net Cost vs. Sticker Price

For purchase options (Buy New, Buy Used), the tool subtracts the expected resale value you set to show the true out-of-pocket cost for the semester. Rental and digital options are already the final cost. Enter an estimated resale value in the Book Info section to activate this calculation.

Weekly Cost

Net cost divided by the number of weeks you need the book. Useful for comparing a rental (no resale value) against buying used with a high resale return. Shorter semesters may favor renting; longer or multi-term use often favors buying and reselling.

ISBN Lookup

This tool validates the format of your ISBN but does not query external databases. Use your ISBN to search prices on your preferred bookseller sites, then paste the figures here for comparison. ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 formats are both accepted.

Tip: Check your campus library for free digital access, interlibrary loan, or a reserve copy before paying. Open Educational Resources (OER) and older editions often cover the same material at a fraction of the cost.
